CODE OF ETHICS
1. I will consider the welfare of my dogs and that of the Breed above
personal
gain or profit.
2. I will maintain the best possible standards of sanitation, health and
general
care for my dogs.
3. I will comply with all American Kennel Club rules and regulations where
they pertain.
4. I will attempt to always exhibit good sportsmanship and conduct myself in
a
manner representative of the principles upon which this club is founded. I
will not speak unjustly of others in the Breed, nor of their dogs, nor their
kennel.
5. I will pledge to educate the public on the standard of the Scottish
Terrier,
and will help the novice whenever and wherever I can with grooming,
training, breeding, and general care.
6. As a member, I will attempt to breed for improvement of the breed as
exemplified by the AKC standard of the Breed.
7. I will refuse stud service to any bitch that is unregistered or any bitch
I
consider in poor health, of unsound temperament. Or of having serious
hereditary faults. Nor shall I use a dog at stud that I consider to have
these
failings.
8. In cases where a dogs or puppies health or conformation are known to be
such as to indicate that breeding of the animal would be detrimental to the
welfare of the Breed, I will withhold papers or retain breeders rights, or
sell
only under the condition that the dog be spayed or neutered, by mutual
agreement in writing.
9. I will fairly represent to the purchasers any stock offered for sale, and
will
not use misleading or untruthful statements in selling or advertising.
10. I will urge all buyers to have a puppy or adult dog sold by me examined
by a
licensed veterinarian within 48 hours of receipt. Said examination to be
paid
for by the purchaser or as previously agreed. A period of 48 hours is
granted
to return any animal so sold for reasons of health, or in the case of the
purchaser no having been able to see the animal prior to shipping, for any
valid reason upon visual examination.
11. The use or sales contracts are recommended to cover any guarantees and
agreements relative to the sale, with signed copies to each party involved.
12. I will not sell or donate dogs or puppies to commercial dog wholesalers
or
retailers, charity auctions, or unethical breeders, nor will I sell to
buyers
where I have reason to believe that the puppy or dog will not be properly
cared for. Further, I will not sell to anyone in litter lots for resale.
13. Any person or persons in violation of the above is subject to suspension
or
expulsion of membership by the Board of Directors of the Heart of America
Scottish Terrier Club.
By signing this Code of Ethics, I acknowledge that I understand and agree
with the
purposes of the HEART OF AMERICA SCOTTISH TERRIER CLUB, that I will
do my best to promote the best interest of the club and the breed and that I
will no
engage in any practice which is unethical or prejudicial to the best
interest of the
club.

The following is taken from the Constitution and By-Laws of the Heart of
America
Scottish Terrier Club:
Article II, Section 3
Election to Membership:
(a) Each applicant for membership shall apply on a form approved by the
Board of Directors
and which shall provide that the applicant aggress to abide by the
Constitution and By-
Laws, the Code of Ethics, and the rules of the Heart of America Scottish
Terrier Club.
The application shall state the name, address, phone number, and occupation
of the
applicant(s) and state the type of membership and date of the application;
it shall carry
the endorsement of two voting members in good standard who are not related
to the
applicant(s). The applicant(s) must attend at least (1) club meeting or club
function
before the applicant can be voted on. Accompanying the application, the
prospective
member(s) shall submit dues and initiation fee when applicable for the
current year;
these will be deposited upon receipt.
(b) All applications are to be filed with the Corresponding Secretary and
each application is
to be read at the first meeting of the club following its receipt (no quorum
is necessary for
first reading). The Clubs General Membership either accepts or rejects the
application
at the next club meeting where a quorum is present. The application will be
read and
voted upon by secret written ballot. Affirmative votes of ¾ of the members
present voting
at that meeting shall be required to elect the applicant.
(c) Applicant for membership who has been rejected by the Club may not
reapply for (1) year
after such rejection, and any reapplication will follow the same procedure
as new
applicants.
(d) Initiation fees and membership dues submitted with the application shall
be refunded to
any rejected applicant.
